Mikayla Lyles: Go Bears!

NorCal preps article.

Oregon nabs California forward Deanna Weaver

Deanna Weaver has given Oregon its third verbal in two days, Weaver's club coach, Sean Chambers, confirmed Wednesday.

Weaver, a 6-foot forward from Santa Clara, Calif., joins JBS club teammate Ariel Thomas and Danielle Love, a forward from Everett, Wash., as the third verbal commitment of coach Paul Westhead's first recruiting class. Thomas committed during a home visit Tuesday, while Love gave Oregon her commitment Wednesday.

Weaver, a senior at Wilcox High School, also considered Arizona State, Washington and Nebraska. She took her official visit to Oregon the same weekend as Thomas.

California nabs in-state guard Mikayla Lyles

Mikayla Lyles has given a verbal commitment to California, according to her club coach, Sean Chambers.

Lyles, a 5-foot-8 guard from Bishop O'Dowd High School in Pleasanton, Calif., also considered Arizona State and Oregon. She took official visits to California and Oregon. With an impressive knack for knocking down three's, Lyles was including among ESPN HoopGurlz' Top Shooters of the Summer.

"She's the most consistent kid I've ever coached," Chambers said. "She's the best clutch shooter I've seen. ... She won a lot of games for us this summer."

Lyles and her JBS Purple teammates surged onto the elite scene this summer with a strong team that has now had five players verbal to Division I schools, three of those to the Pacific-10 Conference with Lyles' decision.

California point guard Ariel Thomas picks Oregon

Oregon landed its first verbal of the Paul Westhead era Tuesday when Ariel Thomas committed to the Ducks, confirmed by her club coach, Sean Chambers.

Thomas, a 5-foot-7 point guard from McClatchy High School in Sacramento, Calif., gave her commitment to the Ducks during a home visit Tuesday. She also considered Nebraska and Texas Christian, but was won over by the potential of the fast-paced program Westhead is looking to install at Oregon, according to Chambers.

"She wanted the opportunity to be the point guard and push the ball up in Westhead's system," Chambers said. "She started comparing everyone else to their style of play."

Thomas took official visits to all three of her finalists but waited to make her decision official until her home visit with Oregon.

Kyra Dunn wants to be a Panther

Kyra Dunn, the 6-foot-3 post prospect from Sacramento, Calif., has given her verbal commitment to the Pitt Panthers. She is the second verbal commitment for Pittsburgh, joining guard Marquel Davis from Fredericksburg, Va.

In early August Dunn narrowed her schools list to a final four that included Boston College, Northwestern and Washington in addition to Pitt.

Dunn is the third of JBS to verbally commit to Division I schools. Teammates Brittany Shine and Sara James committed to the University of Florida and the Stanford respectively.

Sacramento's Brittany Shine adds three offers

Brittany Shine, a 5-10 shooting guard from Sacramento, Calif., recently received offers from Florida, Nebraska and Pitt, according to her JBS club team coach Sean Chambers.

Mikayla Lyles

Ell-Sean Smith

Despite having to sit out her junior year at Bishop O'Dowd after transferring from Amador Valley (based on CIF rules), Mikayla Lyles is still the No. 9-rated prospect in NorCal. Lyles is expected to hit the summer circuit with a bullet as one of the region's hottest commodities approaching the coming season.

Lyles, an all-EBAL guard while at Amador Valley, is one of the region's top perimeter shooters and, as she proved in one contest during her sophomore year versus San Ramon, she can throw up points in bunches. As the saying goes, "good shooters keep on shooting," and never was that more true as in the aforementioned San Ramon Valley game when Lyles dropped 34 on the Wolves, including 22 in the second half and nine straight points in one stretch of the fourth quarter.

A strong, 5-foot-8 guard, Mykayla can play both backcourt positions and her club coach, Sean Chambers, is confident she will do well at both. "She's a solid ball-handler, but I would definitely use her at both guard spots because she is so deadly from the perimeter."

Chambers went on to say that Lyles has an extremely high basketball I.Q. and she has all of the tools college coaches are looking for. He went on to call her "the most offensively skilled kid in NorCal." Chambers looks for her to gain plenty of notoriety in the same manner Amanda Johnson of Maria Carrillo (now at the University of Oregon) did two seasons ago.

Lyles has crafted her offensive game enough to score in a variety of ways from the three-point shot, to the mid-range pull up jumper and she is quite adept at utilizing her strength on opposing guards. Her defense isn't shabby either, as Lyles, also a great player on the soccer field, has, as was noted in a previous scouting report, good footwork, plus she is a solid on-ball defender and has great anticipation in the passing lanes.

Her father, Manuel, can't remember when she didn't compete in sports. "She's a true warrior and we signed her up for CYO basketball when she was a third grader," he said. This "warrior" recently attended a camp where she was the only female in attendance and more than held her own. Even more impressive, Lyles earned straight A's in the first semester so needless to say, she is hitting on all cylinders.

Currently, Arizona St, Oregon, Long Beach St., Santa Barbara, and San Diego St. are just some of the schools paying close attention to the high-scoring guard. Other schools are sure to follow as Lyles hits the summer travel circuit in Oregon, Las Vegas, and Chicago.
